Independent Review of the Lincoln National Life Lincoln Core Capital Annuity

What will we be discussing in this annuity review?

In this review, we will be going over the following details regarding the Lincoln National Core Capital fixed indexed annuity:
  • Type of annuity and how it works
  • Features and benefits
  • How an advisor might present this annuity to you
  • Where this annuity may fit
  • Where this annuity may not fit in with an investor’s or retiree’s overall plan

Annuities can be complex. That’s where having an Annuity Investigator who loves math comes in. We make the complex, simple.

Most people look forward to retirement as a relaxing time in their lives. Unfortunately, though, with more and more employers doing away with defined benefit pension plans, retirees are left to fend for themselves in terms of locking in a long-term income that will last as long as they need it to. While the “safe withdrawal rate” from a retiree’s portfolio used to be in the range of 4%, experts now feel that this rate is closer to 2%…or even less…due to market fluctuations and a low-interest-rate environment. This is particularly true after the 20% market drop that occurred as a result of the 2020 Coronavirus outbreak. So, what can you do to ensure that you won’t run out of income in retirement? One option is to purchase an annuity. Not only can an annuity provide you with a set amount of income over time – including for the remainder of your lifetime – but some annuities will also allow you to obtain tax-deferred growth that is based on upward market movements. For example, with the Lincoln Life Core Capital fixed indexed annuity, you have the opportunity to earn an index-linked return, while at the same time, ensuring that your principal is safe – no matter what occurs in the stock market. As with other annuities, you can also choose from several different income options, which includes one that pays you an income stream for the remainder of your life, regardless of how long that may be. For these reasons, fixed index annuities have become quite popular, particularly with those who are approaching retirement, given their “best of all worlds” features. But before you dive in headfirst and buy the first fixed index annuity you come across, it is really important to know how these financial vehicles work, and what you may anticipate in terms of its performance. That’s where the Annuity Gator comes in!

Due to the constant volatility of the stock market over the past several years, fixed index annuities have become extremely popular with investors as a way to both grow and protect principal, as well as to obtain an ongoing income in retirement. However, while these features may seem highly attractive at first glance, it is important that you look at the whole picture because there is typically some type of “tradeoff” required.

How Lincoln Life Describes the Core Capital Fixed Indexed Annuity

According to Lincoln Life Insurance Company, the Core Capital product is described as a fee-only fixed indexed annuity for capital preservation and tax-deferred growth that is linked to market performance. As a single premium annuity, a lump sum may be contributed to this annuity, without the need to make any additional deposits. In many ways, this annuity is considered as a “bond alternative” that offers higher return potential than traditional deposit accounts, such as government and corporate bonds, as well as most certificates of deposit. One way that the Core Capital annuity provides the opportunity for higher growth is because if it linked to the performance of the S&P 500 index. In this case, if the index has a positive change or remains flat over the year, at the end of that time period, the annuity’s account is credited with a specific rate. If, however, the underlying index performs in the negative for a given year, the account does not incur a loss. Rather, it is just simply credited with a 0% for that time period. This can help with continuing upward movement once the underlying index performs in the positive again. This annuity also offers a fixed account, where the guaranteed rate is not tied to market performance. In the case of this particular annuity, the rate is guaranteed for the first five years. Then, the renewal rates are guaranteed annually. As with other annuities, the growth that takes place inside of the Core Capital annuity does so on a tax-deferred basis. This means that there is no tax due on the gain until the time of withdrawal. This annuity offers a couple of other “bells and whistles” such as the nursing home and terminal illness benefits. Here, provided that you meet the qualifying criteria, you may be able to access funds from the annuity without having to pay a surrender penalty (even if the annuity is still within its surrender charge period). How a Financial or Insurance Salesperson Might Present this Annuity to You

If you have been presented the Lincoln Core Capital annuity by an insurance or financial advisor, he or she likely keyed in on the tax-deferred growth, as well as the opportunity for market-linked growth without the risk of loss in a downward moving market. In addition, because one of the biggest concerns on the minds of retirees (and those who are preparing for retirement) is running out of money before “running out of time,” the advisor may also have focused in on the lifetime income feature. But even though these features sound really enticing, there are a few “tradeoffs” you may need to make in order to secure these benefits – and sometimes these are “glossed over” during a sales presentation. With that in mind, before you make a high-dollar commitment to the Lincoln Core Capital fixed indexed annuity – or for that matter, any annuity – there are a few other things that you need to know. One of the biggies is the fact that the growth is “capped.” In other words, no matter how well the underlying index performs, your annuity will only be credited with a return up to a set amount. For instance, the value of the S&P 500 Index at the end of each contract year is compared to the value at the beginning of the year. And, if the Index is flat, or it has performed in the negative, your account is credited with a 0% for that time frame. (So, no loss is incurred). So far, so good. However, if the index has performed well, the annuity account will earn the percentage change – up to a set cap. As an example, if the cap for a given year is 5%, and the index has a fantastic year and earns a 10% return, your annuity’s return will be limited to the 5% cap. Ouch!

Does the Lincoln Core Capital Annuity Have Any Fees?

As it pertains to the matter of charges and fees, this annuity really isn’t all that liquid, either. For instance, while you can take out up to 10% of the contract’s value each year, if you withdraw more during the surrender period, you’ll be hit with a surrender charge (as well as any taxes that are due).

Lincoln Core Capital Annuity Surrender Charges

Contract Year123456+
Surrender %222220
In addition, if you access more than the 10% annual free withdrawal before the end of the surrender charge period, it may also be subject to a market value adjustment, or MVA. The MVA could be either a positive or a negative adjustment, based on the current interest rate environment at the time of the surrender. Plus, if you are under the age of 59 ½ when you make a withdrawal, you could also incur – in addition to the other charges (and taxes) – an additional 10% “early withdrawal” penalty from the IRS. With that in mind, it is important to note that the purchase of an annuity is always a long-term financial commitment. The Annuity Gator’s End Take on the Lincoln Core Capital Fixed Indexed Annuity

There are many annuities that you can choose from in the marketplace today. But, while having a broad range of options available can be nice, it can often make it more confusing to determine which one will truly fit your needs. That’s why it is important to have an annuity expert on your side. Where it works best: This particular annuity will usually work the best for those who are looking for:
  •  The opportunity to obtain a higher rate of growth than that of a regular fixed annuity
  •  Safety of principal
  •  Lifetime income
Where it works worst: On the other hand, the Eagle Advisory 8 Fixed Index Annuity may not fare so well for those who:
  •  Want to fully participate in market gains
  •  Want or need to access their funds penalty-free within the first six years of purchasing the annuity
  •  Do not intend to use the guaranteed lifetime income feature

In Summary

There are numerous factors that should ideally be taken into consideration if you are thinking about purchasing a fixed indexed annuity. These should include – but certainly are not limited to – how the annuity can produce a return, as well as how safe your money will be, how the income will pay out, and whether or not there are any other optional features that may be added to the annuity (as well as any added costs to attain these benefits). If you are in fact considering the purchase of a fixed index annuity like the Lincoln Core Capital single premium deferred fixed indexed annuity, then you can be assured that your principal will be safe, regardless of what occurs in the stock market, or even the economy as a whole. This annuity can also provide you with an opportunity to grow your retirement funds, and to receive a guaranteed income in the future for as long as you need it. If this is something you would like to pursue, we can offer you a personalized look at how the Core Capital annuity might perform – based on your specific parameters.
