If Not, It May Be Time to Review Your Strategy

When you review your statements, is your financial plan doing what it’s supposed to be doing? If not, you may have some serious concerns about whether or not you will be able to retire comfortably.

Although it may not be much of a consolation, you’re not alone if you’ve found yourself being frustrated over retirement savings and income concerns. In fact, a recent survey conducted by the Alliance for Lifetime Income found that there is a divide between advisor and client retirement expectations, with one of the biggest being the thoughts regarding what it takes to reach the investors’ end goals.

For instance, the majority of advisors expect their clients’ retirements to last between ten and thirty years, while the clients themselves feel that their time frames could be closer to twenty to forty years.

Retirement Planning Disconnects Between Clients and Financial Advisors

In addition to the differences in anticipated retirement time frame, some of the other key “disconnects” between clients and financial advisors when planning their financial futures include:

  • The amount of money that may be needed in retirement (as a percentage of pre-retirement income). In this case, the average financial advisor believes that retirees will need to replace roughly 74% of their working income, whereas only 24% of investors believe that they’ll need to replace between 71% and 80%.
  • Financial challenges faced during retirement. While both investors and advisors primarily agree that medical expenses will be a key financial challenge, there is a fairly wide gap between the belief that longevity and long-term care expenses will also be challenging.
  • Retirement income generators – primarily annuities. Retirement income-generating strategies are also a source of disconnect between advisors and those they serve. Here, for instance, 66% of financial planning professionals feel that annuities can remove the risk of outliving assets, but less than 50% of investors agree.
